Digitization in the casting industry

Initial situation and problem

The casting process is a complex manufacturing process that depends on a large number of different influencing variables. In addition to the obvious variables such as the temperature of a mold, parameters that are not immediately apparent as relevant can also have an influence, such as vibrations of the plant during casting.

Procedure

With the data value stream analysis developed at the Fraunhofer IGCV, the relevant parameters can be identified with a combination of selective data analysis and a targeted on-site process analysis. In the next step, these can be monitored and combined with quality data to optimize the process beyond the previously possible limits.

The Fraunhofer IGCV therefore conducts research together with partners:

  • Sensor technology for casting processes
  • Methods for component traceability
  • KI models for casting use
