Cooperation project of the University of Applied Sciences Munich and Fraunhofer IGCV

Design goes Casting – Design goes Casting – Casting technology and additive manufacturing for furniture and interiors.

How can furniture and interiors be produced using casting technology and additive manufacturing? In the winter semester of 2021/22, students of the Faculty of Design at the University of Applied Sciences Munich and researchers at Fraunhofer IGCV dealt with this question. In the collaborative project »Design goes Casting«, the students were allowed to get creative and produce corresponding designs.

Under the guidance of Prof. Dipl.-Des. Florian Petri, the students, discussed the technological implementation with the experts at Fraunhofer IGCV. In the process, they were not only able to gain valuable experience concerning aesthetic design and its implementation in CAD but also to deal with casting manufacturing processes and learn about their potential and limitations. All student groups were able to successfully complete the task of optimizing their design for additive mold production. Now they are looking for ways to practically implement and finance the resulting ideas: four seats, a record player construction, and a fire bowl.

Overall, the collaboration was a complete success and was able to demonstrate the versatile potential of casting technology: Designs created through additive manufacturing and casting technology are aesthetic as well as innovative and sustainable.
