Fraunhofer expertise at this year's »Leichtbau in Guss« trade fair

The two-day event organized by Hanser Verlag in cooperation with Prof. Wolfram Volk and the Chair of Forming Technology and Casting Engineering at the TUM again attracted an interested expert audience from the German-speaking casting industry to Stuttgart-Nürtingen on November 12 and 13. The demanding lectures focused on the national and global challenges of casting technology. The latest developments in process simulation and monitoring and innovations in materials and processes were also discussed.

In this context, Florian Ettemeyer, research associate of the Fraunhofer IGCV, presented his research on the simulation and optimization of the decoring process connected with inorganic sand binder systems. The great challenge in applying the more environmentally friendly inorganic binders lies in decoring filigree inner cores since here, and the binder does not decompose thermally during casting. Together with Fill GmbH from Austria, Ettemeyer developed a new phenomenological material model, which now, for the first time, predicts the formation and characteristics of core breakage with sufficient accuracy.
