Professor Dr.-Ing Rüdiger Daub | Director of Fraunhofer IGCV

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Daub has been Director of Fraunhofer-Institut for Casting, Composite and Processing Technology IGCV in Augsburg since June 1, 2021. He is head of insitut, together with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Drechsler and Prof. Dr. Ing. Wolfram Volk. He's also division director in the scientific fields of automation technology and energy storage.

In addition to heading the institute, Professor Daub works at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). There he holds the chair of Production Engineering  and Energy Storage Systems at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial  (iwb).

Scientific career and research areas

In his dual role as Director and Chair Holder, Professor Daub will further strengthen the strategic synergies between TUM and Fraunhofer IGCV . With his many years of experience in the automotive industry, most recently as head of technology development and prototype construction of lithium-ion cells at BMW, Rüdiger Daub sets specific focal points at the institute. »At BMW, I was fascinated by the production of lithium-ion cells right from the start. The technical complexity of production is a challenge. At the same time, we as a society need these energy storage systems in order to shape a sustainable future,« emphasizes Daub. »It was therefore very special for me to help set up the  BMW Battery Cell Competence Centera platform to continuously improve all the properties of battery cells..« According to Daub, such concepts are necessary in order to be able to develop and produce internationally competitive, sustainable products in the future.. »Research in the field of battery cells strengthens and secures the competitiveness of Germany as a technology location.«

Before his appointment at the Fraunhofer IGCV and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Rüdiger Daub worked in technology development at the BMW Group for almost nine years. Daub studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Karlsruhe Institut of Technology (KIT) and then worked as a research assistant at TUM's Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb). There he completed his doctorate in the field of Laser Material Processing. After completing his doctorate, he joined the BMW Group. Most recently, he was responsible for electrode production as Head of Technology Development and Prototype Construction. In addition to prototype production, he helped set up the Battery Cell Competence Center, which aims to advance battery cell technology and optimize production processes. Since June 1, 2021, Professor Daub has been one of three Institute Directors of the Fraunhofer IGCV.
