Alloy development of innovative casting materials

Initial situation and problem

One of the predominant topics of technological developments is the increase of energy and material efficiency. Lightweight construction in particular plays a central role here. New materials, hybrids and innovative forms of design enrich the range of instruments available to development departments. Due to their good properties and low density, aluminum alloys are predestined for a variety of lightweight construction applications.

Procedure

We at the Fraunhofer IGCV are working on the development of novel aluminum alloys, which are characterized by significantly improved mechanical properties, especially at elevated application temperatures. In doing so, completely new paths are being taken in order to exploit previously unnoticed potentials in alloy development.
